Pretty soon I plan on venturing to Toronto for school but I need some first hand knowledge so,

Apartment prices: I don't need much, just a simple one bedroom basement suit or bachelor apartment would be fine, what would I be looking at for prices and good websites like craigslist to find them?
Hostels: I only know a few people down there and most i've met online so I'm guessing i'm going to have to stay in one until I find a place, so does anyone know any cheap, clean and safe hostels around toronto?
Waitressing:Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much waitress in Toronto generally make in tips per night?
