'Exceptional': Forecasters are predicting a storm of the sort only experienced once every seven years.

Winds of up to 80mph are predicted to bring down trees and power lines and disrupt transport, prompting comparisons of the Great Storm of 1987

The storm will cut a swathe across the country south of a line from North Wales to the Thames Estuary and could see structural damage to property.

The severe weather could reach its peak during the morning rush hour tomorrow, causing chaos on roads and railways and delaying flights.

Forecasters said the weather system currently forming out in the Atlantic is not an average winter storm and only 30 of a similar force have been recorded since 1821.

They have had their eye on the system since Wednesday, when it became apparent that conditions in the Atlantic could lead to a very nasty storm heading for Britain.

Met Office forecaster John Millard said: "Severe gales will reach the western parts of Britain late tonight. Potentially the storm will be across eastern parts of England during the Monday morning rush hour."
The winds will die down by tomorrow night but the outlook for the rest of the week is for it to remain unsettled and wet.
